1. Create an account.
This is an obvious one. Download the Poshmark app and enter basic personal information required. Next, establish your Poshmark persona. Who do you want your buyers to shop with? My closet is called The Blunt Blonde (the original inspiration for this blog), and it's very me. I want my buyers to have access to fashionable items at fantastic prices because that's what I look for when I'm shopping at a normal store.
2. Sell!
As I began making money from various jobs and took more trips and wanted to put more into my closet, there was nowhere to put it! I'd look at what I owned and say, "Oh, yeah I'll wear that soon," or "That would be perfect if I ever did this," or "I haven't worn that yet, but I know I will eventually." Exactly, it's been hanging there untouched and someone else would probably benefit from it more than me.
I created a growing pile of clothes that were still in good condition and fairly on trend. Next, I snapped photos of each item in the square frame from different angles and on/off the hanger. Finally, I uploaded each to my 'closet,' and filled in the required information like sizing, brand, color, description, and pricing.
While buyers can search based on item information, it's important to continuously like and share other seller's listings, so they can do the same. This will circulate your listings across more of the Poshmark platform, creating more exposure to potential buyers.
Now, it gets fun. Buyers can make a different offer on your items, to which you can decline, counter, or accept. Buyers can also create bundles of multiple items, to which you can offer a bundle discount. Remember, Poshmark is not about earning all of the money back you originally spent on an item. Buyers are looking for a good deal.
3. Shipping.
When one of your listings has sold, Poshmark will email you a pre-paid USPS mailing label. I love seeing where my listings are going to! Packaging is totally up to you; you can use the free boxes offered at USPS or invest a small amount in your own packaging, which is what I do. Sometimes I will use USPS packaging depending on the item, but for the most part I use printed mailers and brightly colored tissue paper that I purchased in bulk. I also throw in a handwritten note for a personalized touch. I spent under $10.00 on packaging, which is about one item sold from my 'closet,' and I still have not run out.
Stick on that mailing label, and drop it off at USPS; you have three days to ship out your items. Confirm through the Poshmark app that you have sent them out.
4. Earn that money!
When your item has reached its destination, the buyer has three days to accept their order. Upon acceptance, your earnings are released to you through mail or direct deposit. Keep in mind Poshmark keeps 20% of your earnings. Another factor to consider is that the buyer does not have to keep their item; they have the option to send it back to you if it's not what they were expecting or it doesn't fit or perhaps it's damaged, for example. Give the buyer no room to question. This is why I always wash and steam my listings before sending, use fun packaging, include a handwritten note, and send it out quickly. I have never had a buyer send back their item!
While there are other platforms for selling items secondhand, I chose Poshmark because it is user friendly in all regards.
